DAYTONA, FL - The Alfred University women's team opened their play in the Daytona Beach Shootout with a 91-50 loss to the No. 4 nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday afternoon from the Ocean Center.
The Saxons (5-2) had made baskets from 10 different players, while drawing 15 fouls against the Warhawks (9-0).
Briana Broadwell (Franklinville, NY/Ten Broeck Academy) scored a career-high 10 points to go with two steals.
Karly Welty (Portville, NY/Portville Central) finished with eight points along with five boards.
Rebecca Jewett (Nyack, NY/Nyack) totaled a season-high six rebounds.
"We certainly got tested today with a team that "brings it" all 40 minutes," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "They are not only tall, but even their guards are long and athletic and as a team, they just put constant pressure on you on both ends. They play great inside-out basketball and obviously press and trap a bunch. Games like this are extremely mentally challenging. You have to really focus on staying present and having that "next play" mentality. I thought we did a pretty good job keeping our composure and trying to punch back as they made their runs."
A three-point shot from
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania) opened scoring for the Saxons in the first quarter. The Warhawks retaliated with a 10-2 run, forcing AU to play from behind. Additional support from Welty had the Saxons trailing 21-7 entering the second quarter.
Grace Rittenhouse (Dansville, NY/Dansville) scored the first four points for Alfred University to open the second quarter. A 12-0 run from the Warhawks was snapped by a three-point shot from
Gillian Flint (Caldedonia, NY/Caldedonia-Mumford). The Saxons trailed 46-22 at the break.
Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) scored five of Alfred's first seven points to begin the third quarter. Broadwell scored 10 points in the third quarter, but a 12-0 run from the Warhawks left the Saxons trailing 71-42. AU was held to eight points in the fourth quarter to end the game.
"All in all, we are grateful to be playing basketball together again, especially down in here in Florida, after a few weeks off," Moskowitz said. "We will enjoy this team meal together tonight, get a good night's rest and be ready to go tomorrow against a very good Simpson team."
Alfred University will continue their play in the Daytona Beach Shootout on Monday against Simpson College with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 PM.
