Box Score ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team won its second game in a row as they came back from a halftime deficit to defeat Hilbert College, 64-59 on the road on Tuesday night.
AU faced a 33-27 halftime score in favor of the hosts but the Saxons (2-0, 0-0 Empire 8) scored 37 in the second while keeping the Hawks (0-2, 0-0 AMCC) to only 26 points. The Saxons were led by
Cole Eells (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) with 18 points while
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) neared a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Casey Curran (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) scored 11 points from the bench to round out the top scorers for AU.
"I thought this was a great win for our program," Head Coach
Erich Kaempffe said. "Hilbert is always very good, especially at home, and they did a great job making it really hard for us tonight. I was proud of our toughness and how our guys defended down the stretch."
Hilbert opened the second half with a first-possession layup to extend the lead to six, but AU cut it down to only one with a 3-pointer from
Kevin Durkin (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) and a layup from Eells. After a Hawks layup, Eells tied the game at 37 points with a 3-pointer off a pass from Durkin. From there it was a back-and-forth battle until the score was tied, 52-52. Eells scored on a fastbreak layup to give AU what would ultimately be the last lead of the game, as the Saxons went on a 10-7 run to close out the win.
The Saxons will next take part in hosting the Annual Special Tee's Tip-Off Classic on Friday and Saturday. First, they will host Ithaca College at 7:00pm on Friday, November 12 from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
