ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team fell to No. 3 seeded St. John Fisher College, 1-0 on Thursday evening in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament.
The Saxons (10-5-4, 5-1-2 Empire 8) had multiple offensive chances within the opening minutes of the game and once again near the end of regulation, but couldn't find the back of the net as time expired.
Momentum from AU was halted in the 33
rd minute of play as
Carli Kovarik controlled a loose ball in front of the Saxon net and forced AU's keeper,
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) out of position and capitalized with the low goal.
The Saxons had four opportunities from corner kicks with an near perfect placement by
Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) in the first 20 minutes of the second half but was denied by a punchout by the Cardinals' (10-5-1, 5-2-1)
Halle Tickell. Tickell made two saves on the day while AU's Fuller made two saves. Palmgreen had a defensive save on the day.
The Saxons will next look towards competing in the Eastern College Athletic Association's playoff tournament.
