ALFRED, NY – The No. 1 seeded Alfred University women's soccer team eliminated No. 4 Westminster College, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) at Yunevich Stadium.
The connection of
Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) to
Katline Cartwright (Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) was made twice, after facing a 1-0 deficit, resulting in the Saxon win. Both assists from Palmgreen surpassed the Alfred University single season record of nine as the new record-holder now has 11 on the season.
"We are excited to get a good result today against a Westminster team who had a great year," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "I thought the team played well throughout the majority of the game. They did a great job of maintaining their composure after we went down, 1-0. Tomorrow will be another tough matchup but we are looking forward to it."
Westminster got on the board first with a goal in the eighth minute of play that ultimately resulted in a halftime advantage for the Titans. AU opened the second half with a flurry of offensive advances, especially with the switch of Cartwright to the front line. It only took 2:25 of the second half to have Palmgreen put a long ball in front of the net for Cartwright to put away, equalizing the game at 1-1.
Just over eight minutes later, the duo teamed up again for the game-winning goal in the 55
th minute of play.
AU held the advantage in shots, 13-10 and shots on goal, 8-3. They also kept Westminster from taking any corner kicks in the first half, holding the game advantage, 7-3.
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) picked up the win in goal, making two saves on the day.
The Saxons will next host No. 3 seeded William Paterson University on Sunday, November 14 at noon from Yunevich Stadium as WPU topped No. 2 Mount St. Mary's (NY) in a 3-0 sweep in the second game from Yunevich.
