Saxons Overpower SUNY Delhi in 81-37 Victory

Box Score

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team concluded the Alfred Tip-Off Classic with an 81-37 win over SUNY Delhi on Sunday afternoon from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

A total of 11 players scored for the Saxons (5-1) in the win. AU also held the Broncos (0-7) to 21.4 percent from the field. The victory for Alfred University marks the first time since the 2012-13 campaign the team has gone undefeated at home during the fall portion of the season.

Junior guard Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) scored a team-high 14 points to go with seven rebounds and a steal. Sophomore guard Leah Harkenrider (Hornell, NY/Hornell) totaled nine points along with a team-high eight boards. First-year guard Felicia Stewart (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) compiled 11 points while shooting 5-of-7 from the field, adding five rebounds, three steals and two assists as well.

"I love how focused we were right from the start," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "We did what we had to do early, which set us up nicely for a solid 40 minutes. It was great to see everyone get some meaningful action today and make an impact to help us. I thought Ralie and Sarri had some very solid minutes today on both ends."

The Saxons applied pressure offensively early and often, putting together a 26-6 run over the Broncos in the first quarter for the early lead. AU and SUNY Delhi traded shots back-and-forth in the second quarter, but efficient shot selections led to the Saxons leading 40-17 at the break. Alfred shot 50 percent from the field in the third quarter for an additional 23 points, while the depth on the roster closed out the game in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

"The next few weeks will be important for us," Moskowitz said. "First, we need to take advantage of this time off and enjoy our time with family. Then we need to finish strong academically, reconnect with some alumni for our alumni game and then stay in shape and put in the necessary work to be ready for our trip to Florida. I'm very pleased with our first five weeks together with this squad and thankful for their effort every single day!"

The Saxons will next travel to Daytona, Florida to face the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on December 19 as part of the Daytona Beach Shootout.
