ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team concluded their fall season with a 2-1 overtime loss to #4 St. John Fisher College during the Empire 8 Quarterfinals on Monday from Growney Stadium.
The Saxons totaled 13 shots, five of which were on goal. AU also defended three corner kicks from the Cardinals.
Midfielder
William Moore (Stormville, NY/John Jay) scored on his lone shot. Forward
Alexander Teijeira (North Collins, NY/North Collins) finished with a team-high three shots, two of which were on goal. Goalkeeper
Daniel Koenig (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) picked up three saves.
"The team fought through a lot of injuries and adversity this season," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "We missed a huge chance to advance in the Empire 8 Tournament. I was very proud of the way we played."
The Saxons offense found shot opportunities in the opening half, forcing three shots across the first 20 minutes of action. Alfred successfully defended four shots and one corner kick from St. John Fisher before entering a scoreless halftime.
In the second half, the Saxons were the first to get on the scoreboard on a pass from forward
Henry Smith (Manassas, VA/Lancaster) to Moore within the 71
st minute. The Cardinals quickly retaliated, equalizing the score in the 84
th minute before the match went into overtime. St. John Fisher secured the win early in the overtime period by finding the back of the net in the 97
th minute.
