ELMIRA, NY -- The Alfred University men's soccer team picked up an Empire 8 win on the road as it defeated Elmira College, 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons (3-7-2, 2-2-0 Empire 8) was led, offensively, by
Henry Smith (Manassas, VA/Lancaster) who had the game-opening goal and assisted on what would prove to be the game-winning goal as well as
Daniel Koenig (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) who picked up the win in goal. "We fought really hard for the win today," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "Eggsy [Koenig] made three or four fantastic saves to keep us in front. The first goal we scored was because of very good ball movement and player support. Henry [Smith] ran the forward line expertly and his shot was perfect. We had lots of game bests for the team today. We will lean on this as we move forward."
Smith first got AU on the board in the 28th minute of play off a pass from
Gavin Harrington (Elmira, NY/Notre Dame). The first half would go on to end with a 1-0 Saxon advantage. Just over 15 minutes into the second half, Smith would be credited with the assist as
Sai Baraka (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) put in what would ultimately become the game-winning goal. The Soaring Eagles would fight back with a goal in the 83rd minute of play but would not be enough as the Saxons kept the offensive pressure off as time expired.
The offensive efforts of Elmira were plentiful throughout the game as they put together 12 shots on goal with Koenig stopping 11 of them.
The Saxons will next host Utica College on Saturday, October 16 for a 1:00pm, Saxon-for-Saxon game.
