It's a Great Day to be a Saxon! Women's Soccer Upsets Nazareth in 1-0 Win

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team concluded their regular season with a 1-0 victory over Nazareth College on Saturday evening from Yunevich Stadium. With the win, the Saxons (10-4-4, 5-1-2 Empire 8) move up to the No. 2 seed ahead of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament.

AU totaled seven shots, four of which were on goal. The Saxons also successfully defended three corner kick opportunities from the Golden Flyers.

"Something our team takes pride in is our work rate," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "If we work hard in each game, we're going to see results. Our work rate hasn't dropped, which showcases our ability to battle adversity."

Defender Jacey Palmgreen (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) recorded her ninth assist of the fall season, tying the single-season school record. Midfielder Alyssa Smith (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) scored once across two shots. Goalkeeper Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) picked up six saves in her sixth shutout victory of the season.

The Alfred University offense set the tone early offensively, forcing two corner kicks and two shots across the first 10 minutes of action. The Saxons successfully defended four shots before entering halftime with a scoreless draw.

The Saxons wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the second half, as a corner kick from Palmgreen to Smith gave AU the 1-0 lead. Alfred rejected two more shots and corner kicks from the Golden Flyers before securing the victory.

"We were happy to get the No. 2 seed," Yanni said. "We will continue to work on the small stuff we have been improving upon over the last month to find success in the Empire 8 Tournament."

Alfred University will remain at home to host St. John Fisher College on Thursday, November 4 in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament at 6:00pm.
