KEUKA PARK, NY - Three goals in the second half from the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a 3-0 win over Keuka College on Wednesday night from the Jephson Complex Game Field.
The Saxons (8-4, 3-1 Empire 8) only allowed five shots while forcing seven of their own, four of which were on goal.
"In the second half we definitely picked up our tempo of play," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "We also played more to feet which helped us create some much better offensive opportunities."
Forward
Abigail Austin (Hornell, NY/Hornell) totaled one goal to go with one assist. Midfielder
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) and forward
Karah Landries (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley Central) each finished with one goal. Goalkeeper
Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) totaled three saves in her fourth shutout victory of the fall season.
The defense for Alfred University set the tone in the opening half, successfully defending two corner kicks and two shots on goal across the first 20 minutes of action. AU compiled two shots and one corner kick opportunity before halftime.
The Saxons found opportunities on the offensive end in the second half, as a pass from midfielder
Angelina Gonzalez (Marion, NY/Marion) to Landries gave Alfred the lead. A pass from Austin to Gilbert extended the lead at the 81:37 mark. Less than three minutes later, Austin found the back of the net for the 3-0 advantage. With two off-target shots from Keuka in the final minutes, Alfred University secured the victory.
"We have to continue to work on the small things in training along with focusing on putting a full 90 minutes together a our schedule is going to be very tough over the next two weeks," Yanni said. "I am proud of the resilience the team showed tonight coming out in the second half and putting together a solid effort to get the win."
The Saxons will return home to host Hartwick College on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
