ALFRED, NY – Efficient play from the Alfred University women's tennis team led to an 8-1 win over Utica College on Friday afternoon from the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.
"We talked about this earlier this year, but we've started to play with a lot of confidence when we walk on the court," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "It has started to pay dividends and I'm so happy that our team has accepted and embraced it."
The Saxons (3-6) received their first point from match play thanks to the combined effort from senior
Lauren Boshart (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and first-year
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central), as they defeated Ellen Lyga and Morgan Willis from No. 1.
First-year
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and sophomore
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) extended the lead for AU from No. 2, outlasting Haley Dekin and Victoria Vo, 8-4.
Boshart celebrated her Senior Day with the match-clinching point in singles action, defeating Paetra Heeren from No. 3. Call, Gwozdz and sophomore
Alex Rossen (Charlton, NY/The Darrow School) each won their respective matches in singles play to finish the afternoon.
"We play another good team tomorrow," Crouch said. "We will have to get there ready to compete and see if we can take down another Empire 8 opponent."
The Saxons face a quick turnaround as they travel to play Hartwick College on Saturday with matches beginning at 2:30 PM.
