Saxons Drop Close One at Home to Oswego State

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men's lacrosse team hosted Oswego State College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (1-2, 0-0 Empire 8) fell in defeat to the Lakers by a score of 12-11.

After falling behind early, Paul Forte (Greece, NY / Greece Athena) knotted it up at one in the first quarter. 

The Lakers added two more in the first quarter while Cale Donegan (Corning, NY / Corning-Painted Post) scored a man-up goal to make it 3-2 in favor of Oswego State after the first.

Donegan scored two straight to open the second period and give the Saxons their first lead of the contest.

The teams traded blows in for much of the second period before Oswego State scored three in a row to end the quarter and head into halftime leading AU 7-5.

The Saxons came out of the break firing, as Noah Soriano (Nyack, NY / Nyack) and Forte each scored to tie the game at seven.

Each team netted two more in the third quarter to enter the final 15 minutes all tied at nine.

Alfred quickly gained the advantage in the fourth as Jake McNaney (Corning, NY / Corning-Painted Post) netted one with 14:12 to play. 

The Lakers then went on to score two straight and regain the lead 11-10 with just over seven minutes to play.

Oswego State tacked on anothere goal with just under four minutes to play to make it a 12-10.

McNaney scored a goal with 30 seconds to play to give the Saxons one more chance but the final posession was knocked away by a Laker defender and the game ended in a close defeat for AU.

Donegan finished the day with four goals and an assist to lead AU while Forte wasn't far behind with three scores.

McNaney notched two huge goals for Alfred while Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY / Elmira) had a goal and an assist. 

Shane Weber (Hull, MA / Hull) made some impressive plays on defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Garrette Briggs (Horseheads, NY / Horseheads) was 23-26 on faceoffs for AU and picked up a team high 18 ground balls. 

Gage Ponsetti (Penn Yan, NY / Penn Yan) finished with five saves in goal for the Saxons.

Alfred will be on the road for its next three, beginning this Saturday at SUNY Poly at 1PM.
