ALFRED, NY -- Alfred University women's basketball's first-year
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) tied the program record for most Empire 8 Rookie of the Week honors on Monday as she was tabbed with the award for the fourth time this season, as made official in an announcement from Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro.
Ion tied
Harley Cleary '15 as Cleary had four in her inaugural collegiate season. The Saxons have been listed on the Empire 8 Weekly Awards five times this season as
Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) was named the Player of the Week in November. This also ties the program record for most E8 Weekly Awards from the 2016-17 season as well as the 2011-12 season.
Ion tallied 10.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, leading the Saxons to a 2-0 week against Empire 8 foes Elmira and Hartwick. Ion tallied 14 points, knocking down four 3-pointers against Elmira on Friday. Ion helped Alfred University claim its first win over an Empire 8 team that had a winning conference record in the second half of the E8 schedule since the win over Hartwick in the 2015-16 season, defeating the Hawks 48-45 off a last second 3-pointer from
McKaylee Croll. It was also the Saxons' first win over Hartwick in the last nine attempts, snapping an eight-game skid.
Ion and the Saxons will next close out the season with a road Saturday game at Houghton College on February 22 at 4 p.m.
