ROCHESTER, N.Y. – For the third time in her inaugural collegiate career, Alfred University's Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania/Episcopal School of Jacksonville) has been named the Empire 8 Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday as made official in an announcement by Associate Commissioner, Joe Venniro.
 
This week, Ion averaged 11.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, while converting on five 3-pointers for the Saxons. She scored 15 points at Utica on Saturday and added eight points and five boards at Sage Sunday. Ion bumped her scoring average up slightly after the week, averaging 11.7 points per game in 2019-20.
 
Ion also earned Empire 8 Rookie of the Week honors on Dec. 9 and Jan. 20.
 
Ion and the Saxons will host their final home contests of the regular season this weekend. On Friday, February 14, Alfred will host Elmira College in its 'Play4Kay' charity game at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Saxons will host Hartwick at 4 p.m. as part of the 'Saxon WinterFest' and Senior Day festivities.
