BROCKPORT, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team was on the road at The College at Brockport on Friday evening for a matchup with the 7-2 Golden Eagles. The Saxons (5-5, 0-0 Empire 8) fell behind early in a game that found them on the losing end by a score of 87-64.
An 11-0 run began the contest for the Golden Eagles as AU found itself in an early hole.
The deficit though, was quickly erased when as
Sam Dagon (Hornell, NY / Hornell) and
Darren Miller (Seneca Falls, NY / Mynderse) converted multiple buckets to bring Alfred to within one point at the 13:07 mark of the first half.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead over the next six minutes of the opening half before the Saxons stormed back took their first lead 24-23 thanks to two converted free throws by Dagon at the 6:52 mark.
Alfred was able to get into the paint and to the foul line with ease in the closing minutes of the opening half and went up by as many as 12 points before ending the first 20 minutes of play leading the Golden Eagles 43-34.
While the first half was back and forth and ended on a high note for Alfred, the second half proved to be all Brockport.
The Golden Eagles went on a 29-2 run to open the second half and took a commanding 63-45 lead with 12:17 to play.
That lead reached as many as 24 points in the later minutes of the contest before the clock hit all zeros with Brockport coming away on top by 23 points.
Dagon was the leading scorer for AU and the only Saxon to reach double figures in scoring as he finished with 15 points on the evening.
Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY / Olean) had nine points and led the way on the defensive end with five steals.
Miller and
Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY / Ellicottville) each ended with eight points while
Adam Enders (Belfast, NY / Belfast) scored seven.
The Saxons will play at Keuka College on Monday at 6PM before opening conference play next Friday at home against St. John Fisher College.
