ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University men's basketball team traveled to Hartwick College for a Friday night Empire 8 matchup against the Hawks.
After Alfred took an 8-0 lead during the opening minutes, Hartwick worked its way back to take a 9-8 lead at the 13:20 mark of the first half.
The Saxons (7-7, 1-2 Empire 8) had difficulty getting into rhythm during the remainder of the first half and ended up with a 14 point deficit at halftime.
A Hartwick three pointer began play in the second half and extended the Hawks lead to 17.
Minutes later, a tip in layup by the Hawks put them up by 20.
Just as it looked like Hartwick may run away with the second half as well,
Sam Dagon (Hornell, NY / Hornell) and
Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY / Horseheads) each hit three-pointers to help cut the Saxons deficit to single digits.
Hartwick did not let up though and went on another run to regain an 18 point lead with just over eight minutes to play in the game.
The Saxons came alive late and made it a six point game after a Dagon layup but that would be as close as they would get in the 70-61 loss.
Dagon was the high scorer for AU with 22 points on the night. Marshall finished with 20 and blocked two shots on the defensive end.
Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY / Ellicottville) also hit double figures in scoring with 11 points. Bowen also grabbed a team high eight rebounds.
Alfred will look to put this loss behind them to prepare for the quick turnaround as they travel to Elmira on Saturday afternoon for a 2PM tip.
