ALFRED, NY -- For the first time since the 2014-15 season, Alfred University has a Student-Athlete that has been named the Empire 8 Women's Tennis Player of the Week as senior
Tori Pellegrino (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) was officially announced as the recipient of the award, as made official in a statement by Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro on Monday afternoon.
The last Saxon to earn this award was
Rachel Cook '16 during the 2014 season.Â
Pellegrino was undefeated on the week, going 4-0 in the Saxons' 2-0 Empire 8 week. Pellegrino played at No. 1 in both singles and doubles. She first helped the Saxons win their first match of the year with an 8-1 win on the road at Hartwick. She defeated Victoria Wilson, 6-3, 6-4 and teamed with
Amber Smith (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh Central) for an 8-4 doubles win over Wilson and Skylar Watts. Pellegrino then earned the match-clinching point at home against Utica College with a 6-0, 6-0 singles win over Madeline McIlnay. Her and Smith teamed up earlier for an 8-5 win over McIlnay and Morgan Willis as well.
Pellegrino was joined by football's
Aaron Griffin (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) as the Saxons of the Week on Monday as well. The Alfred University women's tennis team will next travel to take on Oswego State on Tuesday, September 24 for a 3 p.m. start.
