ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team hosted Nazareth College on Saturday at Yunevich Stadium to open Empire 8 play. The Saxons (4-1-2) and Golden Flyers ended in a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods.
Â
Nazareth, a team that has played a tough schedule thus far, was first to strike with a goal late in the first half.
Â
Scoring opportunities were tough to come by throughout the second half as both teams were locked in at the defensive end.
Â
It was not until the 70
th minute that Alfred finally found a hole in the defense as
Amanda Guariglia (Valley Stream, NY / Valley Stream South) put a shot on goal that deflected off the Nazareth goal keeper and over to
Karah Landries (Angelica, NY / Genesee Valley Central) who was there to clean things up and send the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at one.
Â
That was where the score stayed through the end of regulation.
Â
The first overtime period saw both teams having trouble finding opportunities once again. The second extra period was a different story as Alfred nearly netted two goals.
Â
At the end of the night neither team was able to convert before the clock hit zero and the game ended in a draw.
Â
"I thought the team played well tonight," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "Our work rate was there for 110 minutes which was a big factor in us getting the result that we did. Overall it was a great effort and we are excited to get back to work on Monday and keep improving."
Â
AU will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to the University of Rochester for a non-conference match up with the Yellowjackets at 7PM.
