Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saxons and Golden Eagles Play to Scoreless Tie

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team was back at home on Friday evening trying to make it four straight wins as they hosted The College at Brockport. Both teams had many chances to get on the board in a physical, defensive matchup but neither team broke through as the match ended in a scoreless tie.

It looked as if the Saxons (4-1-1, 0-0 Empire 8) were going to get on the board early when Natalie O'Brien (Syracuse,  NY / East Syracuse- Minoa Central) used some fancy footwork to get a point blank shot close to the net but a late defender sweeping in and a great save by the Brockport goal keeper kept the game scoreless.

The second half brought less opportunities but more physicality with bodies flying around all over the turf.

The Golden Eagles were able to get some late corner kick opportunities but the Saxons stood their ground and kept Brockport off of the scoreboard.

The first overtime period was more of the same until the final minute when Brockport's Molly Zeintek fired a shot toward the net. Hannah Fuller (Binghamton, NY / Chenango Forks) continued to display some fantastic goal keeping as she got a hand on the shot and some help from the cross bar to send it into a second overtime period.

The teams went into the final overtime period with all they had. Angelina Gonzalez (Marion, NY / Marion) was able to get a shot on goal with six minutes to play but it did not get through.

At the end of the day the defense and goalkeeping held up and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Emily Wright (Dallas, TX / Plano West) led AU with two shots on goal. Gonzalez, O'Brien, Katline Cartwright (Le Roy, NY / Le Roy), Amanda Guariglia (Valley Stream, NY / Valley Stream South), and Paige Castleman (Garland, TX / Naaman Forest) all had one shot on goal. Fuller finished with five saves on the night and allowed no goals.

"I think tonight was very good for us," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "It was a back and forth battle for 110 minutes. We had some really good chances early in the game but just couldn't get on the end of them. Overall it was great to see how we matched up against a good Brockport team."

The Saxons will have some time off before opening up Empire 8 play against Nazareth College next Saturday at 6PM. That game will be played at Yunevich stadium and will be the Saxon-for-Saxon game.
