BUFFALO, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team was back in action on Saturday afternoon for day two of the Spartan Classic. The Saxons (1-1, 0-0 Empire 8) took on the host, D'Youville College.
For the second consecutive day, it took until well into the action for either team to get on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for the Saxons they were on the wrong end of this one.
After a scoreless first half that saw Alfred dominate in shots taken, having six to D'Youville's zero, the early minutes of the second half brought the one and only goal of the game.
After multiple corner kicks and some off-target shots from AU, D'Youville finally gained possession in the second half and converted it into a goal from Jordan Pachla at the 53:50 mark to go up 1-0.
The Saxons continued putting themselves in position with corner kicks and shots around the net but were unable to convert as the Spartans came away with the 1-0 victory.
"It was a tough game for us offensively," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "We had trouble creating chances and finishing the chances we had. There is a lot for us to take away from this game to improve on."
AU ended with 12 shots on goal while D'Youville had just two.
Emily Wright (Dallas, TX / Plano West) and
Abigail Austin (Hornell, NY / Hornell)led the Saxons with three shots on goal each.
Natalie O'Brien (Syracuse, NY / East Syracuse-Minoa Central) had two shots on goal while
Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY / Catholic Central) and
Sierra Wilson (Youngstown, NY / Lewiston-Porter) each had one shot on goal.
The Saxons will have a few days off before heading to Medaille College on Wednesday to take on the Mavericks at 4PM.
