ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team opened its 2019 season with a 9-0 loss to SUNY Oneonta on Thursday evening on the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.
Â
The Saxons (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8) got behind early in doubles as the only team to score a point was the No. 1 team of
Tori Pellegrino (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Amber Smith (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh Central). They fell to the Red Dragons' Mya Lipscomb and Olivia Fraser, 1-8.
Â
"Obviously the score didn't reflect how tightly we thought the match was contested," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "I'm thankful for my returners and we have some new players and they stepped up and it's a learning experience for them as well. We have to work on our serves. Our serves need to be something that we can count on but I'm excited to see each one of them with a dominant serve towards the end of the year."
Â
In singles action, Smith had the top score despite a loss at No. 3 to Giovanna Buccina. The first set went extra points but Buccina walked away with the 7-5 first set victory and then closed out the final set with a 6-2 mark.
Â
Pellegrino had a close second set at No. 1 singles but fell, 0-6, 4-6.
Isabelle Benoit (Bow, NH/Tilton School) also had a close match at No. 6 singles as she fell, 2-6, 1-6.
Â
The Saxons will next host The College at Brockport on Saturday, August 31 at 1p.m.
