MENDON, NY – The Alfred University men's tennis team (7-7, Empire 8 4-3) wrapped up its 2019 season with a loss to #1 Houghton College in the Empire 8 semifinal match after ending a 13-year playoff drought.

The Saxons fell in five-straight matches to the Highlanders, falling behind 3-0 in doubles play and dropping the first two singles matches. The senior duo of
Kyle Kemper (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and
Peter Smock (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh) dropped a hard-fought match at #2 doubles 8-5. Sophomore duo
Logan Cross (Olean, NY/Olean) and
Ryan Brown (Olean, NY/Olean) had another hard battle at #1 doubles, 8-5.

With momentum on their side heading into singles play, the Highlanders capitalized, earning their berth to their second Empire 8 tournament final in two years.

Jordan Crouch said. "With all the hard work they've put in this season they gave themselves a chance to play for something truly special. Even though we didn't come out on top, this season is going to serve as the foundation for success Saxon tennis seasons for years to come. I am especially grateful for Pete and Kyle for their leadership this year. I couldn't have done it without those two setting the tone every day. I'm going to miss them, but I'm already excited for next season!"
