GREENVILLE, PA – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team traveled to Thiel College for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Tomcats. The Saxons (0-2, 0-0 Empire 8) fell by a score of 17-4.
AU went down by a score of 8-0 in the first half before breaking through at the 6:04 mark on a goal from
MacKenzie McWilliams (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown).
The Tomcats netted two more and ended the half with a 10-1 lead over the Saxons.
Thiel scored the first four goals of the second half before
Madison Latranyi (Danville, PA/Danville) scored the first of her two goals on the day to make it 14-2.
Latranyi and
Sarah Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) then scored back-to-back goals around the halfway point of the second half to cut the deficit to 10 goals but that would be all the offense the Saxons would get.
Turner and
Paige Rowlee (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) each caused two turnovers for Alfred and Rowlee went all 60 minutes in goal for AU and stopped 13 Tomcat shots.
"This week we battled illness and some new injuries, but we continued to have some fantastic moments of growth together," Head Coach
Erin McGaffigan said. "Today we saw three athletes (Turner, McWilliams, Latranyi) earn their first career goals. We found some good rhythm in the second half and we look forward to building on that in the coming weeks."
The Saxons will be in Pennsylvania again next Friday and will face off against Westminster College at 1PM.
