LeMorta and Bowen Sweep Empire 8 Weekly Awards After 3-0 Week

ALFRED, NY -- For the first time since October 23, 2017, a pair of Alfred University Student-Athletes have claimed all of the Empire 8 Weekly Awards in their respective sport as senior Dom LeMorta (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and first-year Elliot Bowen (Salamanca, NY/Ellicotville) earned both men's basketball honors on Monday afternoon.

LeMorta was named the Empire 8 Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in his career and Bowen picked up his third Rookie of the Week honors on Monday, joining fellow first-year Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) as a three-time recipient of the award. Senior Sage Brown (Cortland, NY/Cortland) is the other Saxon to earn an Empire 8 Weekly award as last Monday, he was named the Player of the Week, making it eight times that Alfred University men's basketball players have been selected this season. The last time that a pair of Alfred University Saxons swept the Empire 8 Weekly Honors was when Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) and Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) of the women's soccer team took the Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week honors at the end of October, 2017. Shanahan and Riffelbach then both earned Easter Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week the next day as the 2017-18 academic year was the last year the ECAC would select weekly winners.

LeMorta helped lead the Saxons to a 3-0 week and put them in a position to either claim the Empire 8 regular season championship title, or the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. The wins were home against Elmira College, away at Utica College and away at No. 8 regionally-ranked St. John Fisher College where he and the Saxons handled the Cardinals in dominant fashion as they broke the school record for most consecutive Empire 8 wins since joining the conference as they are now on a 10-game streak. LeMorta averaged 21.7 points per game as he hit a season-best 26 points against Utica, making a career-high 12-of-12 free throws. Coming into the week, his career-high was five free throws but on Wednesday, against Elmira, he was 7-of-9. He hit for eight 3-pointers on the week including a 4-of-8 performance at Utica. LeMorta pulled down 11 defensive rebounds on the week while assisting on nine buckets. He also stole the ball four times including a career-high three times against Elmira College.

Bowen helped lead the Saxons to a 3-0 week and put them in a position to either claim the Empire 8 regular season championship title, or the No. Bowen averaged 16.3 points on the week including a collegiate career-high of 27 points against St. John Fisher. Saturday's game also saw a career-high seven free throws on eight attempts while he tied his career-high in field goals made with a 10-of-15 performance from the floor. Bowen totaled 16 rebounds while tying his career-high in offensive rebounds with four against Elmira on Wednesday. He also tied his career-high in blocks as he stuffed three shots against Utica College, showing that he broke personal bests in all three games. Bowen wrapped up his stellar week with four steals with half occurring against St. John Fisher.

LeMorta also earned this week's Saxon of the Week honors alongside Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) of the women's basketball team, making it his fourth time receiving the honors this year.

The Saxons will next close out their regular season as they host Nazareth College on Tuesday, February 19 at 7:30PM. Both the men's and women's game (5:30PM) are designated as Purp-Out games! If any fan plans on attending the games, show your spirit by wearing as much purple as possible!
