Box Score GENESEO, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team was on the road at SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday evening to take on the unbeaten Knights.
The Saxons (2-5) kept it close for a good portion of the contest and played a tough defensive game to compete with a talented Geneseo program.
An impressive first quarter helped AU take a 15-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
The Saxons went down by a score of 28-21 at the end of the first half but stormed back to within four points during the early portion of the third quarter.
The perimeter shooting began to heat up for Geneseo during the third quarter as the Knights made 3-5 from behind the arc to outscore the Saxons 18-11 in that period and take a commanding lead.
Alfred never backed down though and went head to head with Geneseo during the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately for the Saxons the deficit was too much to overcome and the Knights stayed unbeaten with the 68-51 win.
"Very proud of the way we competed throughout the game tonight," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "I think we are starting to develop a better understanding of the defensive system, and with that comes confidence to execute. Geneseo is a really great program. We did a nice job of making them uncomfortable offensively, and its nice to see this defensive urgency that we have been looking for. There are a lot of good things to take away from the last week or so from our team."
Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT / Ithaca) had her best offensive game of the season with 19 points. Hicks also forced four steals on defense.
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY /Pine Valley) scored eight points and had a team high in rebounds with six.
Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY / Middleburgh Central) and
Ana Ion (Bucharest, Romania / Episcopal of Jacksonville) each finished with seven points.
The Saxons will return home on Saturday to host SUNY-Delhi at 2PM.
