ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team wrapped up its 2019 campaign with a split in non-conference action on Senior Day on Saturday in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
Â
The Saxons finish the season with a record of 9-19 and a 2-5 mark in Empire 8 action. They started Saturday with a four-set loss to Oswego State but then swept the Wildcats of SUNY Poly, in dominant fashion.
Â
AU first lost to Oswego with set scores of 16-25, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25. The biggest highlight of the match was
Darian Ortiz (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michael's) as she recorded eight service aces and 26 digs (both career-highs). The school records for most aces in a three-set and five-set match are each seven while the four-set match is 11. Ortiz passed even the five-set mark but technically, does not get the school record as Heather
D'Andrea '18 had 11 in four sets against Bard College back in 2014. Ortiz tacked on another 10 digs and two aces in the Saxons' three-set, 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 win over SUNY Poly.
Â
"I think today was overall a quality day. We played a tough Oswego team to start the day and our young offense just wasn't producing, but I think Sarah [Raeman] carried us in that game," Head Coach
Dakota Pruiss said. "The Poly match was a totally different note. I think Rylee [Russin] lit it up and to see her play six rotations was awesome. Overall, a good end to the season."
Â
Between both SUNY Poly and Oswego matches, every single Saxon got in to play on Senior Day that was in attendance. In pre-match ceremonies, the Saxons celebrated the careers of
Meg Maddalena (Portola, CA/Portola), Mikala McCartney (Buffalo, NY/St. Mary's), Sarah Huzyk (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) and
Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) as
Sarah Baty (Portola, CA/Portola) was celebrated the previous week.
Â
Sarah Raeman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) led the Saxons' scoring in the Oswego match with 12.5 off of 10 kills and two aces along with one block assist.
Samara-Jade Mok (Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany/Ramstein) took top spot in the nightcap match as she had 8.0 points off of seven kills and two block assists.
