ALFRED NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team hosted Westminster College on Wednesday evening at Yunevich stadium. The Saxons (3-8, 0-2 Empire 8) prevailed in overtime to defeat the Titans by a score of 2-1.
After a scoreless first 78 minutes of play, the Saxons were first to break through on the scoreboard when
Zachary Gloskin (New City, NY / Clarkstown South) sent a laser pass in front of the net where
Evan Merkey (Webster, NY / Webster Schroeder) used his length to sky over Titan defenders and put a header into the back of the net.
Westminster was quick to return fire as a shot from deep out snuck through the Alfred defense and past the goal keeper to even the score in the 80
th minute.
At the end of regulation the score was all knotted at one.
The extra period was short lived thanks to a great setup from
Terence Coyle (Derry, NH / Pinkerton Academy) and a timely goal from
Justin Eaton (Williamson, NY / Williamson) to send the Saxons home with a hard fought victory.
"A fantastic game by both teams in tonight's contest," Head Coach
Tracy Blake said. "The best thing about tonight's contest was the way we responded after Westminster equalized. Great effort by the whole squad. Evan [Merkey] was back to his best defense and the forward line was led well by Justin [Eaton] and
Saif Alseyofi (Jeddah Saudi Arabia/AQS)."
The Saxons will look to build on the win when they travel to Hartwick on Saturday for a match with the Hawks at 3PM.
