Empire 8 Play of the Week
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team won a nail-biter at home today against Houghton College. The Saxons (6-10, 2-5) defeated the Highlanders by a score of 64-61.

Fast break layups helped Houghton jump out to an early 11-4 lead in the first quarter. A 7-0 run sparked by a
Chanice Battle (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) three-pointer got the Saxons rolling late in the first.

With two seconds to play in the first quarter and the game knotted at 15,
Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) nailed a deep three at the buzzer that gave AU the 18-15 lead after one.

The Saxons began to build on that lead in the second quarter when McCoy hit another shot from beyond the arc, extending Alfred's lead to six points.
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) hit a three of her own at the 5:16 mark, giving the Saxons their biggest lead of the game 28-21.

With seconds left in the second quarter, AU inbounded the ball for the last possession at the half and immediately got the ball into the hands of McCoy who hit her second buzzer beater of the game to send Alfred into the break leading Houghton 34-27.

AU came out of the locker room and began to build on its lead. A layup from
Samantha Pierre-Louis (Wheatley Hills, NY/Half Hallow Hills West) followed by a three from Wilcox made it a 12 point Alfred lead.

McCoy found the ball in her hands once again late in the third quarter as she sunk another three with  40 second left, making it 51-39 after three.

After going up by 14 early in the fourth, Houghton began to work its way back into the game. An 11-0 run from the Highlanders quickly made it a three point game with 6:04 left to play.

At the 3:55 mark, a fast break layup from the Highlanders tied the game at 57. Free throws from
Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christian) and
Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) allowed Alfred to regain the lead 61-58 with 1:37 to play.

Wilcox then iced the game with foul shots, followed by a Figueroa good free throw to secure the 64-61 victory.

"Today we played our most complete game in quite some time," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "We made shots, moved the ball really well to get some open three's, defended with toughness and then relentlessly attacked the offensive glass."

McCoy led the team in scoring with 18 points, including shooting 4-7 from behind the three point line. Wilcox recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Pierre-Louis had 10 points and a blocked shot. Boland scored eight, grabbed six boards and dished out three assists while Figueroa had seven rebounds and four assists.

"Credit to Houghton for fighting back late, but happy for our team to be tough enough to pull this one out and redeem ourselves for a previously poor showing at their place, Moskowitz said."

Alfred will be on the road at Hartwick College next Friday evening at 5:30PM.
