ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team was back to its winning ways on Wednesday evening against Elmira College. The Saxons (7-2, 2-0 Empire 8) defeated the Soaring Eagles by a score of 2-0.
Â
AU dominated in shots on goal with 16 to Elmira's zero and ended with seven corner kicks while the Soaring Eagles attempted just one.
Karah Landries (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley) put the Saxons on the board at the 28:41 mark when she took the ball from just after midfield and found an opening to bury one into the net. Alfred would go into the half with a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Saxons continued to put shots on goal in the second half but had trouble finding the back of the net until
Amanda Guariglia (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South)  scored at the 66 minute mark to give AU an insurance goal and the 2-0 victory.
Â
Emily Wright (Dallas, TX/Plano West) led the Saxons with five shots on goal. Guariglia, Landries and
Natalie O'Brien (Syracuse, NY/ East Syracuse-Minoa) each had two shots on goal.
Â
"I thought the team did well overall tonight. We had trouble finishing early on along with their goalkeeper making some great saves. It was nice to pick up our second E8 win. We are still growing as a team and will continue to work each day to improve on our weaknesses,"
Head Coach Craig Yanni said.
Â
Alfred will travel to Hartwick College this Saturday for an Empire 8 matchup with the Hawks at 4 PM.
