HOBOKEN, NJ – The Alfred University men's soccer team faced off against Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon. The Saxons (2-7, 1-1 Empire 8) fell to the Ducks by a score of 2-1.
Â
The game was a defensive battle in the first half until the Ducks broke through with a goal at the 41-minute mark to go up 1-0, which is where it would stay heading into the half. The second half was more of the same until the 75 minute mark when Stevens Institute of technology added a necessary insurance goal to take a 2-0 lead. In the 75
thminute,Â
Cody Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia)Â put Alfred on the board, converting a penalty kick to cut the lead to just one. The Ducks defense would hold off the Saxons for the remainder of the contest to secure the 2-1 victory.Â
Joe Gonzalez (Marion, NY/Marion)Â had a big day in goal for Alfred with seven saves.Â
Â
"Valiant effort by the Saxons in a 2-1 loss at 15
thranked Stevens. The team once again played the game as scripted in training this week. The first half was very even with the team coming in one down at the half. The lads were very disappointed to be losing at halftime. We regrouped and tried to get the goal back but a fantastic strike on goal from 25 yards out made the score 2-0. Last year or earlier this year we would have folded, however we came back and scored a well deserved goal from
Cody Cronmiller on a penalty kick.  We had a couple of opportunities to tie the game but just couldn't find the net again. Man of the match,
Joe Gonzalez, made a half dozen top-drawer saves to keep us alive. He was once again huge for us,"Â
Head Coach Tracy Blake said.Â
Â
The Saxons will have a quick turn around, as they will host the Cortland Red Dragons Sunday evening at 7PM.Â
