ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team fell to SUNY Cortland on Sunday afternoon, 8-1 at the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.
The Saxons (4-3, 3-0 Empire 8) were swept in doubles action to begin. The No. 2 doubles team of
Nurila Kambar (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Republic Physics and Mathematics School) and
Miranda Sakala (Olean, NY/Olean) had the closest finish as they fell, 8-6.
"Despite what the score might indicate, this match was very closely contested,"
Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "Our Saxons battled with a strong Cortland team and we're keeping our heads held high. I'm proud of how the team performed today and we're going to have a great week of practice to get us ready for next weekend."
Sakala picked up the only win in singles at the No. 4 spot with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Inda Gillett (South Kortright, NY/Delaware Academy Central) had a close No. 2 singles match where she loss, 7-5, 6-2.
The Saxons will next hit the road for a two-match weekend as they face The Sage Colleges on Friday, September 21 at 3:30PM. Then they head to Stevens Institute of Technology for an noon start on Saturday.
