Volleyball Falls in Home-Opener 3-0 to Brockport

Saxon Highlights

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team fell to visiting The College at Brockport, 3-0 on Tuesday evening in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

The Saxons (0-9, 0-0 Empire 8) put up set scores of 17-25, 13-25 and 17-25. The biggest push Alfred University gave the Golden Eagles was in the third set as they were down 20-7. AU ended the set with a 10-5 run led by kills from sophomore Amanda Burns (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) and junior Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) as well as a solo block from Smith, assisted block from Burns and first-year Rachael Moravansky (Mount Airy, MD/Linganore) and an ace from Moravansky.

Sophomore Sarah Raeman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) recorded a match-high 9.5 points off of eight kills, one ace and one block assist. Smith followed with 7.0 points from six kills and her block solo. Burns had 3.5 points from two kills, one ace and one assisted block. Moravansky chipped in 1.5 points from her ace and block assist and first-year Lainey Arneson (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) rounded out the scoring with a block assist for 0.5 points.

Junior Sarah Huzyk (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) led the defense with nine digs in only two sets of play. Burns had 13 of the Saxons' 16 set assists while sophomore Julia Fanning (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior) recorded the last three.

"I have to say that we wouldn't having done that last year and I really have to give Sarah [Huzyk] credit on the defense with back-to-back digs on the ball and her character really jump-started that change in the third set," Head Coach Dakota Pruiss said. "[Amanda] Burns did a great job by scoring on the two balls that she killed but our passing just wasn't where it needed to be to give her more opportunities in the third."

The Saxons will next head to Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA for three matches. Their first match is at 7PM on Friday, September 14 against Rowan University. Then, they take on the hosts at 11AM on Saturday morning and later, face Misericordia University at 1PM.
