Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Alfred holds Saint Lawrence scoreless in second half, falls 5-2

CANTON, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team dropped their second in a row today while on the road against St. Lawrence, 5-2.

St. Lawrence got on the board early with a goal by Tapshack Augustine, assisted by Sam Sapnar. The Saxons (0-2, 0-0 Empire 8) then returned fire in the sixteenth minute with their first goal of the season from Alexander Tostanoski (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post), assisted by Cody Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia). Minutes later, the Saints regained the lead with a header from Ryan Crouse that was assisted by Charlton Kelly. St. Lawrence was able to gain a commanding, 5-1 lead going into the half with goals from Jethro Dede, Brendan McNamme and Ethan Riddell.

"After a good start, we lost goalkeeper Joe Gonzalez (Marion, NY/Marion) due to injury and came in 5-1 at the half," AU Head Coach Tracy Blake said. "Assistant Coach Tyler Landries gave a talk at halftime and it was so powerful that, with some tactical instructions, we entered the second half with new life. The final score was 5-2 but we hit the post twice and it could have been a different ending with some luck," Blake said.

The Saxons scored their second goal in the second period while holding St. Lawrence scoreless for those 45 minutes. Alfred University's goal came when Evan Merkey (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) sank a penalty kick less than a minute into the half.

Looking to the future Coach Blake said that "if the team plays to the level of today's second half we will be looking at a different scoreboard in future contests."

Alfred will be back home for a midweek matchup with The College at Brockport on Thursday evening at 6PM.
