Saxons Struggle at Home Against the Spartans

SaxonTV Play of the Week | Empire 8 Play of the Week

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team fell to visiting D'Youville College Wednesday evening, 16-6 at Yunevich Stadium.

Senior midfielder Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) continued her start strong season for the Saxons (0-9, 0-3 Empire 8) as she finished with four goals in the contest. Senior defender Emily MacWilliams (Geneva, NY/Waterloo) added one goal and an assist while sophomore defender Allison Hanvey (Camden, NY/Camden) chipped in with one goal.

Senior defender Martina Lewis (New York, NY/Frederick Douglas) had a stellar game on defense as she picked up six groundballs while causing three turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) grabbed six groundballs while first-year defender LeeAnna Bianchi (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added four groundballs. Gilbert also caused three turnovers while MacWilliams and first-year Sarah Turner (Bentonville, AR) caused two turnovers each.

"Our defense is our most senior part of the field with many returners who not only played years in the college level but also specialized in defense when they were in high school and we probably had the best game this season in terms of connecting with our players in transition, still not to the success rate that we would prefer but definitely improvement," Head Coach Erin McGaffigan said. "Our offense is still the youngest part of the field and we're working on finding the right combination to find each other in the right looks and understanding preference of play and finding out when, where and why we need to shoot or make a pass selection but we continue to grow and improve and every day is better than yesterday."

Gray went the distance in net, making 13 saves.

The Saxons will be in the midst of a three-game home stand as they face Nazareth College this Saturday, April 14, at 1 PM in conference action.
