ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team opened the season with a tough home loss to SUNY Cobleskill. The Saxons (0-1, 0-0 Empire 8) fell by a score of 75-63.
Â
Cobleskill controlled the lead for the majority of the contest after a tight first quarter that ended 18-16. The Fighting Tigers outscored AU 23-13 in the second quarter to take a 39-31 halftime lead. The Saxons played even with Cobleskill for a good portion of the second half but were unable to get close enough for a chance late in the game. The Saxons had trouble getting their three-point shooting going, which made it difficult for them to close the gap.
Â
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) opened the 2018-19 season off with a strong offensive performance leading the Saxons with 22 points while converting 8-of-11 free throws. She also chipped in nine rebounds, two steals and three blocks.
Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christian) had a strong offensive performance with 12 points while
Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) and
Chanice Battle (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) each had seven.
Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/ A. Phillip Randolph) was strong on the defensive end for AU with four steals and five boards.
Â
"I thought we gave good effort, we talked about lapses of energy and communication and that showed today but we really didn't back down and we were always in the game," Head Coach
Mike Moskowitz said. "We didn't shoot it well but we talked about controlling the controllable balls. Overall, I thought we competed well."
Â
The Saxons head to Buffalo State next Friday for the Betty Abgott Invitational where they will face the Bengals of Buffalo State on Friday at 3PM then Thiel or Cazenovia on Saturday afternoon.
