ITHACA, NY – The Alfred University men's soccer team traveled to Ithaca College on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup with the Bombers. The Saxons (4-10, 3-1) were defeated by a score of 3-1.
AU was first to get on the board during the 25
thminute when
Jeremy Walther (Irondequoit, NY/ Irondequoit) turned a free kick from 40 yards out into a goal for the Saxons to go up 1-0. Ithaca would respond at the 36:45 mark to tie it at one, which is where it would stay heading into the halftime break.
Minutes into the second half, the Bombers would convert on a penalty kick opportunity to gain a 2-1 advantage. They would get another in the 50
thminute to pad their lead and hold onto that lead to walk away with a 3-1 victory.
Cody Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia), Michael Villafane (Las Vegas, NV/Arbor View) and
Bobby Saucier (Rocky Hill, CT/Rocky Hill) would each record one shot on goal for the Saxons.
Joe Gonzalez (Marion, NY/Marion) had nine saves in 68 minutes in net for AU.
"Great fight put up by the Saxon Army away to previously ranked #22 Ithaca. Again the team played very well away from home and deserved a 1-1 tie at half time,"
Head Coach Tracy Blake said. "The second half saw Ithaca create a 3-1 advantage through a penalty and a defensive error by the purple and gold. The team regrouped and unfortunately missed a penalty of our own. The whole team is ready for the E8 game versus Nazareth on Saturday. Shout outs for first year players
Mason Sanborn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketchum), Tavian Hino (Livonia, NY/Livonia), Michael [Villafane] and Bobby [Saucier] as well as the whole squad for their efforts."
Alfred will be back at Yunevich Stadium on Saturday evening for an Empire 8 matchup versus Nazareth College at 6PM.
