Volleyball Splits Regular Season Dual Matches

UTICA, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team split its final two matches of the regular season before heading into the Empire 8 Tournament on Saturday with a win over Oswego State and a loss at SUNY Poly.

The Saxons (7-20, 5-3 Empire 8) swept the Lakers of Oswego in three sets with scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-13. They only managed one set against the Wildcats of SUNY Poly as they fell 20-25, 15-25, 25-20 and 19-25. The duo of Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Karina Morling (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) led the Saxons in the first match of the day as Smith totaled 15.5 points from 12 kills, three aces and one block assist and Morling posted 11.5 points from six kills, two aces, two block solos and three block assists.

"Today was a good test in preparations for Empire 8 play," Head Coach Dakota Pruiss said. "We are hoping to repeat the level we played at against Oswego during our upcoming match against Stevens. Overall, I cannot be upset with a 2-1 week to end the regular season."

Amanda Burns (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) had 32 set assists in the first matchup on her way to a double-double with her team-second, 10 digs. She finished her match with Oswego with 5.5 points from three aces, two kills and one block assist. In the second match, Burns posted 27 set assists and four digs.

The Saxons were led by Sarah Raeman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) in the match with SUNY Poly. She had 13.5 points from eight kills, three aces and five block assists. She also chipped in two digs in the match. Smith followed Raeman with 11.5 points against the Wildcats from 10 kills, one ace and one block assist.

Sarah Huzyk (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) led the defense on the day with 15 digs against Oswego State and 13 in the nightcap.

The Saxons will next travel to Hoboken, NJ for the second year in a row as they claimed the No. 4 seed and will face the No. 1 seed, Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, November 2 at noon.
