Saxons Hold of Brockport While Cashmer Posts Career High in Saves

BROCKPORT, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team traveled to The College at Brockport on Tuesday afternoon for a mid-week, non-conference matchup with the Golden Eagles. The Saxons (11-6, 3-4 Empire 8) took down Brockport by a score of 1-0.

"I thought today was a good win for our team against a great soccer program," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "We did a great job in the first half of creating chances and testing their goalkeeper."

The goalkeepers for both teams were busy throughout the contest with AU putting seven shots on goal and Brockport doubling that total with 14. The lone goal of the contest came in the 40thminute when a deep strike off of a free kick from Emily Wright (Dallas, TX/Plano West) found the back of the net to give the Saxons a 1-0 advantage heading into the half.

The second half was a defensive battle with Brockport attempting to even the score and Alfred trying to hold it's slim lead. Makenzie Cashmer (Weedvile, PA/Elk County Catholic) held strong in the net for the Saxons with a season and career high of 14 saves to help Alfred secure the shutout victory.

"The second half was a struggle for us offensively," Yanni stated. "We were on the defensive the entire 45 minutes but the team never stopped battling. Our back four of Amanda Guariglia (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South), Danielle Perry (Leicester, NY/York), Keira Palumbo (Northport, NY/Northport) and Allyson Cohen (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) along with our goalkeeper Makenzie [Cashmer] really gave everything they had to keep Brockport off of the scoreboard.

Wright led the charge with three shots on goal while Sierra Wilson (Youngstown, NY/Lewiston-Porter) had two shots on goal and Olivia Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and Natalie O'Brien (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) each had one.

The Saxons will head to Albany to wrap up their regular season in a matchup with The Sage Colleges this Friday at 7PM.
