ALBANY, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a tough loss on the road to The Sage Colleges on Friday evening. The Saxons (11-7, 3-5 Empire 8) fell to the Gators 1-0. 
 
The lone goal of the contest came in the fifth minute of first half from Sage's Joleen Marfone to put the Saxons down a goal. The remainder of the contest was a defensive battle, as neither team would find the back of the net after that.  
 
AU had ample opportunities to get on the board including a shot from Emily Wright (Dallas, TX/Plano West) that deflected off the cross bar. The Saxons had four corner kicks attempted in the first half alone but were unable to convert any of those into scoring chances. 
 
"We gave up an unfortunate goal early on and created a couple of great opportunities in the second half but just couldn't put one in," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "The team never gave up and should be proud of the progress that we made this year and the steps our program has taken."
 
Abigail Austin (Hornell, NY/Hornell) led AU with three shots on goal while Wright, Natalie O'Brien (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa), and Amanda Guariglia (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) each had one shot on goal. Makenzie Cashmer (Weedville, PA/Elk County Catholic) played all 90 minutes in goal and had six saves for the Saxons.
