Third Set Rally Falls Short in 3-0 Volleyball Loss to Brockport

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team fell, 3-0 to the College at Brockport on Friday evening to start its three-match weekend at Rochester Institute of Technology.
 
The Saxons (2-17, 2-3 Empire 8) were downed with set scores of 14-25, 8-25 and 20-25. Alfred University held a lead in the third set for the majority of the time and on a couple of instances, had a four-point lead as they were once up 12-8. Following that point in the set, Brockport battled back to take a three-point lead, 17-14 on its 9-2 run. Alfred pushed forward to tie the third set, 17-17 after kills from Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Sarah Raeman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) as well as a Golden Eagle attack error. Brockport sealed the deal with an 8-3 run that was highlighted with four, unanswered scores at the end.
 
Alfred was led by Sarah Huzyk (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) and her 13 digs. Smith followed with nine as she led the team in scoring with 8.5 points from eight kills and one block assist. Raeman posted 6.0 points from kills while Karina Morling (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) was the only other Saxon with more than one point as she recorded three kills and one block assist.
 
"Sarah [Huzyk] gave a steady performance for us against a tough opponent," Head Coach Dakota Pruiss said. "It would have been nice to execute earlier on but I think we learned a lesson tonight."
 
Amanda Burns (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) had 18 set assists and the team's only ace.
 
The Saxons will next face RIT on Saturday morning at 11AM. Then, they take on Empire 8 foe, Elmira College in non-conference play at 1PM. The Saxons will then face Elmira again on Wednesday, October 17 at 6PM in Elmira for their actual Empire 8 Conference match.
