Football To Host #4 Brockport in Empire 8 Showdown

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University Saxon football team (4-1, Empire 8 3-0) will host the #4 College at Brockport Golden Eagles on Saturday, October 13 in Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons are on a three-game win-streak in the Empire 8, defeating Cortland, Morrisville State and Buffalo State.

Series History
The Saxons are 31-9-3 against the Golden Eagles with the series beginning in 1949 when AU took home a 26-0 lead. The Saxons shutout the Golden Eagles the next year as well 33-0. Brockport earned its first win of the series in 1957, defeating AU 2-0.

The 2017 matchup fell in #10 Brockport's favor, with the Golden Eagles pulling out a 35-25 win en route to their first-ever Empire 8 Championship. Since 2013, AU maintains a 3-2 record over the Golden Eagles.
 
Last year's game began with Brockport pulling out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. However, Maleke Fuentes '18 and Bryce Morrison teamed up for a 13-yard touchdown pass to pull within one score. Only minutes later Trevor Monk '18 inched the Saxons closer, 14-10, hitting a 20-yard field goal with 4:27 to go in the half.
 
Brockport pulled away again in the third quarter, scoring back-to-back TD's from 44 and seven yards, bringing the game to 28-10. Joe Germinerio finished the day with three touchdowns on the day for the Golden Eagles.
 
The Saxons answered back at the very end of the third quarter when Michal Urban caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Morrison. Early in the fourth, Aaron Griffin scored another touchdown for AU, bringing them within three, 28-25, with 9:39 to go in the game. The Golden Eagles sealed the game with 2:41 to go, scoring on a one-yard rush.
 
The Saxons were held to a season-low 33 yards on the ground in the game while Morrison threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Brockport accumulated 96 yards on the ground and 208 through the air.
 
Last Time Out for the Saxons
The Saxons rolled over the Bengals of Buffalo State last week, 51-7. AU opened the game on a 13-0 run on back-to-back rushing touchdowns by Nas Smith. Buffalo State answered back its first drive of the second quarter, connecting on a 91-yard touchdown run, bringing the game to 13-7.

The Saxons took control of the remainder of the half, scoring on a four-yard rush by Robert Smith Jr. and recording a safety when Nick Milgate and Rodney Bailey sacked the quarterback in the end zone. AU took a 23-7 lead into the intermission.
 
The second half was all Saxons when they scored 28 unanswered points. The first score came from a 7-yard pass from Ben Burk to Nas Smith. It was the second receiving touchdown for Nas Smith in his career and second in as many games. Chris Harders got in on the action, catching his first touchdown of the 2018 campaign from 26 yards outs.
 
Finally, Eric Graham returned a pick-six from 35 yards out while James Kerr recorded his first-career touchdown to round out the scoring.
 
Nas Smith led the team with 125 yards rushing and three total touchdowns including two on the ground and one through the air. Burk accumulated 240 yards on 15-of-27 (55.6%) passing and two touchdowns - tying his career- high. First-year Rodney Bailey had a breakout game, recording five tackles including 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for a loss. Leo Pamphile also had 3.0 tackles for a loss and 1.0 sacks.
 
Receiving Votes
The Saxons are back in the national spotlight, earning Top-25 votes once again. AU started the season receiving votes but fell out of contention following a 21-13 loss to Ithaca at home. However, after wins over SUNY Cortland, Morrisville State and Buffalo the Saxons are receiving votes in the D3Football.com Top-25. The Saxons received five votes for the top-25, ranking second in the Empire 8.
