ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team fell to visiting Houghton College, 66-40 Tuesday evening at the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena in the Empire 8 conference opener.
 
The Saxons (2-7,0-1 Empire 8) were paced by sophomore guard 
Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) and first-year guard 
Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) each finished with nine points while junior guard 
Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) and 
Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) added seven points apiece. Hicks lead the team in rebounds with 11.
 
The Highlanders gave the Alfred problems on offense, as they opened up the game on a 9-1 before Hicks made a layup to start making a dent in the lead. Houghton continued to find offense, leading by as much as 10 before McCoy converted two free-throw attempts and on Alfred's next possession, draining a three to make it 17-11 with the advantage to Houghton with 16 seconds remaining in the first.
 
Alfred would continue to hang around in the second quarter, cutting the Highlander lead to four as Wilcox converted both of her free-throw attempts to make it 29-25 with 1:05 to go before halftime.
 
The Saxons are next in action as they find themselves in the midst of a three-game home stand as they host Hartwick College on Friday, January 5 at 8 PM.
