Alfred’s Struggles Continue at St. John Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team fell on the road at St. John Fisher College, 73-49 in Empire 8 action.

The Saxons (2-11,0-5 Empire 8) were led by sophomore guard Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) 14 points while junior guard Katlyn Boland New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) added 11 points. Boland, sophomore forward Sam Pierre-Louis (Wheatley Heights, NY/Half Hallow Hills West) and first-year guard Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christian) were all tied with six rebounds for Alfred.

Alfred found themselves down early, trailing 7-1 at the 8:59 mark before Wilcox drove the lane for the layup and then hit the three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point. Erin Hulbert answered with her own three-pointer to make it 10-6 with the advantage to the Cardinals. Figueroa responded with a layup before Fisher ended the quarter on a 9-2 run.

The Cardinals lead by as much as 15 points in the second quarter before Figueroa cut the deficit to seven points in the final seconds before halftime as she converted both of her free throw attempts to make it 31-24 in favor of Fisher.

"I thought we played a good first half," said Head Coach Monique McLean. "At halftime we talked about how important the first five minutes of the second half would be but we didn't come out strong and take care of the ball. Limiting turnovers will be our focus going into the next game.

Olivia Baumann led the way for Fisher, scoring 21 points while Nichole Robinson added 11 points. Hulbert and Robinson both grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

The Saxons took advantage of second chance opportunities, outscoring the Cardinals 11-8. The Cardinals had help from the bench, outscoring Alfred 26-6.

The Saxons look to get back on track next Tuesday, January 16, as they travel to Elmira College in Empire action at 8 PM.
