Volleyball ends Cortland Tournament with pair of losses

CORTLAND, NY -- The Alfred University women's volleyball team fell to Lebanon Valley College and Oneonta on Saturday afternoon with matching scores of 0-3 during the final day of the Cortland Red Dragon Tournament.

In the opener against Leb Valley, the Saxons (0-4, 0-0 Empire 8) were topped with set scores of 21-25, 13-25 and 14-25 and then with scores of 17-25, 21-25 and 23-25 in the closest of the two matches on the day against Oneonta in the nightcap.

Sophomore Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) led the Saxons in points with a total of 19 between the two matches. She had 11 kills, one ace and one solo block against Oneonta. Defensively, sophomore Sarah Huzyk (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) led Alfred with 23 digs (13 in the later match) as she was the libero in both meetings. She added two service aces in the first match with Lebanon. Senior Jacquelynn Hicks (Greenville, NY/Greenville) had seven kills and two solo blocks on the day with both blocks and five of the kills occurring in the second contest.

Senior Aubrey Totsline (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 22 set assists on the day along with three aces and 14 digs.

The Saxons will next head to Pennsylvania for the Northwest PA Challenge. The first day, the Saxons take on Thiel College at 5 pm on Friday, September 8 and then Bethany College at 7:15 pm in Meadville, PA. On Saturday, Alfred University heads to Erie, PA to play Penn State-Behrend at 11 am and then The College at Wooster at 1:15 pm.
