AU gets edged out by Hartwick in men’s lacrosse conference play

ONEONTA, NY – The Alfred University men's lacrosse team lost Saturday afternoon against host Hartwick College, 10-8.
 
Junior Jake Lynch (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) continued his strong year, finishing with six points (four goals, two assists). Sophomore Joe Fornataro (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) had two points (one goals, one assist) in the matchup while three other Saxons got in the scoring column, making one goal apiece.
 
The Hawks were led by Jake Sachse who had three points (two goals, one assist) on the afternoon.
 
The Saxons (4-4, 0-2 Empire 8) fell behind early as they trailed 2-0 before freshman Jake McNaney (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) recorded his first collegiate goal with 11:28 remaining in the first quarter. The Hawks went on a three-goal run to extend their lead in the beginning of the second quarter to put Alfred down, 6-2. The Saxons then went on a three-goal run of their own fueled by Lynch who scored two goals just 26 seconds apart. Alfred trailed going into halftime, 8-7.
 
After a scoreless third quarter, the Hawks extended their lead to three as Nick Couvaris and Sam Ferguson each scored. Lynch scored the lone second half goal for the Saxons.
 
Senior Jimmy Pratti (Slatehill, NY/Minisink Valley) led the team in ground balls with five while sophomore Frank Gavigan (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) and freshman Ben Cafolla (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) each had four ground balls.
 
Sophomore Brandon Smith (Queens, NY/The Governor's Academy) was credited with the loss, allowing six goals before being relieved by junior Drew Gardner (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) who allowed four goals. Connor O'Brien earned the win for the Hawks as five saves on 13 shots faced.
 
Alfred is next in action this Wednesday, April 5th, as they take on Nazareth College at 4 p.m. at Yunevich Stadium.
