GENESEO, NY – Host SUNY Geneseo rallied from a two-goal fourth quarter deficit to edge the Alfred University men's lacrosse team, 13-12, Sunday afternoon.
Alfred's loss in the non-league contest was its first of the year and drops the Saxons to 2-1.
AU led 12-10 3:29 into the final frame on an unassisted goal by junior attack
Jake Lynch (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point). The host Blue Knights closed out the game with three straight goals, including
Michael Engstrom's game-winner with 3:03 left in regulation.
Geneseo took an early lead with two goals to open the game before AU responded with five unanswered – two by senior midfielder
Derek Bishopp (Livonia, NY/Livonia) – to take a 5-2 lead. Geneseo stopped the streak with a goal with one second left in the period to trail 5-3 after one.
The Blue Knights scored the first two goals of the second to tie the game at 5-5 before AU netted a pair of goals to go into halftime up 7-5. Geneseo outscored the Saxons 5-4 in the third and going into the final quarter, AU held an 11-10 advantage.
Sophomore attack
Joe Fornataro (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) led Alfred with four goals and a pair of assists, while Bishopp finished with three goals and two assists.
Freshman midfielder
Frank Gavigan (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) had two goals and junior midfielder
David LaSpina (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) (five groundballs), Lynch (one assist) and senior midfielder
Nick Skibitsky (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) each netted one. Senior long stick midfielder
Chris Deisenroth (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) led AU with six groundballs and three caused turnover.

Alex Leuze had two goals and two assists for Geneseo,
Junior
Drew Gardner (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) made 11 saves in goal for the Saxons.
Michael Yehl and
Tyler Wetzel combined to make seven saves for Geneseo.
Alfred plays a pair of games during Spring Break next week: Wednesday, March 8, at 4 p.m. at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA; and on Saturday, March 11, at 3 p.m. against the College of Wooster, at Hood College in Frederick, MD.
