Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Strong second half lifts Alfred over Hilbert College in women’s lacrosse action

ALFRED, NY – Junior Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) continued her strong play as she scored five goals as the Alfred University women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Hilbert College 17-10 Wednesday afternoon at Yunevich Stadium.

The senior duo of Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Tracy Johnston (Akron, NY/Akron) had a strong showing as they each scored four goals apiece. Senior Leah Ellithorpe (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) scored a pair of goals while senior Rachel Vorchheimer (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and junior Taylor Miller (Medina, NY/Medina) each scored a goal to round out the scoring for the Saxons.

The Hawks were led by Marisa Huffman with four goals and Emily Gawlak with two goals and three assists.

The Saxons (2-4, 0-1 Empire 8) lead for most of the game as they scored three unanswered during a four-minute stretch in the first half making it 6-3 with 9:17 remaining in the half. Hilbert found some offense of their own scoring four unanswered goals to give them the 8-7 advantage with 1:13 remaining in the first half. With the half coming to an end, Johnston found Vorchheimer for the equalizer and soon after Ellithorpe put Alfred back on top for good with the 9-8 halftime lead.
The Saxons put on a strong showing in the second half as they outscored the Hawks, 8-2 behind Glibert's four goals.

Senior Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) led the team in ground balls with six while senior Dana Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) finished with five. Gilbert also had a nice game on the defensive end, causing three turnovers while Ganley and junior Emily MacWilliams (Geneva, NY/Waterloo) each caused two turnovers.

Gray went the distance in net as she picked up the win for Alfred while setting a season high in saves with 21.

The Saxons are next in action this Saturday, April 1st, as they host Hartwick College at 1 p.m.
