Alfred University women's hoop team wins overtime thriller in season finale

HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team overcame a 37-28 halftime deficit to defeat host Houghton College, 83-78, in overtime Saturday afternoon in the Saxons' season finale.

The Saxons (4-21, 2-14 Empire 8) were able to go into overtime after first-year guard Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) hit the game-tying jumper with one second left on the fourth-quarter clock. Wilcox's bucket capped the Saxons' rally from a nine-point deficit, as the Saxons outscored Houghton 42-33 over the third and fourth periods.

Houghton led by 10 points (62-52) with just under six minutes remaining in regulation, but the Saxons outscored the Highlanders 18-8 the rest of the way to force the extra session. Houghton had taken a 70-68 lead on two Madison Detwiler free throws with five seconds left in regulation before Wilcox dribbled the length of the floor and hit a floater from inside the foul line just before the final buzzer sounded.

AU took a 78-74 lead in overtime on a layup by senior forward Amanda Off (New Berlin, NY/Unadilla Valley) with 2:44 left in overtime, but Houghton tied the game 38 seconds later on a pair of Elle Reed foul shots. AU held Houghton scoreless the rest of the way, taking the lead for good on a lay-up by first-year forward Bri Hicks (Slaterville Springs, NY/Ithaca) with 1:49 left, then connecting on three of six free throws down the stretch.

Alfred was led by the two-headed attack of Off and Wilcox, who scored a combined 53 points. Off was a presence on both ends of the floor as she recorded a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while adding three assists. Wilcox scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists. Sophomore guard Katlyn Boland (New York, NY/A. Phillip Randolph) added nine assists and four rebounds.

The Highlanders were paced by Brittany Lenart with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists while Detwiler had 16 points and eight rebounds.
