OSWEGO, NY -- The Alfred University women's volleyball team defeated both SUNY Poly and Oswego State in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon to close out its regular season.
The Saxons (9-20, 4-4 Empire 8) topped SUNY Poly in four sets, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16 and then bested Oswego in five sets, 25-23, 17-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-13. The Saxons were led in the first match by both seniors
Jacquelynn Hicks (Greenville, NY/Greenville) and H
eather D'Andrea (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) with 15.0 points each. Hicks had 13 kills, one ace and two block assists. She hit a .321 with only four errors on her 28 attempts. D'Andrea had nine kills and six aces. Junior
Elisabeth Estep (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) also had a whopping six aces and a team-leading 24 digs.
Senior
Aubrey Totsline (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 35 assists in the match along with 10 digs and three kills of her own as she had no errors on six attempts for a .500 hit percentage. Sophomore
Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) had 12.5 points from 12 kills and one block assist.
In the fifth set of the second match, the Saxons were down to Oswego, 9-11 before a three-point run to take the lead, 12-11 with two kills from D'Andrea and first-year
Sarah Raeman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua). It then was a back-and-forth fight until it was 13-all before a D'Andrea kill and a match-winning kill from Hicks.
Smith had a match-leading 24.0 points off of 23 kills and one solo block. She hit a .259 off of nine errors on 54 attempts. Totsline had 47 assists. Estep had 17 digs.
The Saxons will next look to take on No. 1 seeded Steven Institute of Technology on Saturday, November 4 at noon in the first round of the Empire 8 Playoffs. It is the first time the Saxons have made the E8 Playoffs since 2000.
