Empire 8 Play of the Week
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team defeated visiting SUNY Canton Wednesday evening, 2-0, in dominating fashion at Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (5-7-3, 1-2-2 Empire 8) got on the board in the sixth minute as junior midfielder
Emily Wright (Dallas, TX/Plano West) sent her corner kick in play where first-year midfielder
Amanda Guariglia (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) was able to head the ball into the net. Sophomore forward
Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) put the game out of reach as she headed the ball into the net in the 59
th minute of action off of a headed pass from sophomore
Allyson Cohen (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy).
"It was nice for us the pick up this win," said head coach
Craig Yanni. "Our defense played well and offensively, we tried to get Emily [Wright] as many 1-vs.-1 matchups as we could. This game helped us realize things that we still have to work on in order to close out a strong Empire 8 schedule."
Alfred held a sturdy advantage in shot attempts with 27 (13 on goal) in comparison to Canton's two. The teams tied in corner kicks with two apiece.
Senior goalkeeper
Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) went the distance in net, as she earned the win despite not having faced a shot on goal from the Kangaroos.
Allison Wakefield made 11 saves on 13 shots faced for SUNY Canton.
The Saxons hit the road as they face St. John Fisher College Saturday, October 21
st, at 3 pm before closing out the regular season with two home matches.
