ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team topped host St. John Fisher College in double-overtime, 1-0 Saturday afternoon for the first victory over the Cardinals since 1999.
Sophomore forward
Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) headed in the game-winning goal for the Saxons (6-7-2, 2-2-2 Empire 8) in the 107
th minute of play after junior
Emily Wright (Dallas, TX/Plano West) took the first shot on goal the Saxons had all day which deflected off of the Cardinal keeper and towards Riffelbach.
"Sammy Jo [Shanahan] played an excellent game keeping us alive," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "The girls fought throughout the entire game and continued to believe even being under pressure for the entire game."
Fisher held the advantage in shot attempts with 27 (20 shots on goal) to Alfred's six (two on goal).
Senior goalkeeper
Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) recorded a season-high 20 saves in the shutout victory. The mark also tied her personal career-high as well.
The Saxons return home next Tuesday, October 24
th, as the face conference foe Nazareth College with major postseason implications at stake.
